Question Types

When designing your survey, there are several types of questions for you to choose from. Using the correct question type is important to collecting accurate feedback and having the needed reports available to view data.

Single Select

A rating question where participants pick one answer from a list of choices. This is the most common question type for collecting quantitative data in which a value is assigned to an answer. Most reporting is based on this rating question type and data is expressed as a percentage of favorable responses (the top 2 box score). We recommend a 1-5 agreement rating scale.
Data from single select question types can be found in the below charts:
  • Dashboard
    • Overall Favorability
    • Favorability by Category
    • Highest/Lowest Rated Items

Open-Ended

This provides participants the option to write what they like as a free-form comment. An open-ended text box is provided and supports an unlimited number of characters. Responses to open-ended questions are displayed in the comment analysis widget and available to download into a comment report.

Yes/No

Participants have two possible answers such as Yes/No or True/False. This question type is useful for checking information or asking for confirmation. Results display in the yes/no question area of your report page showing you the percentage of each response, yes vs no. Responses are not included in the percent favorable scores.

Matrix

A series of questions is presented in a grid that share the same answer scale. This question type can be used for assessing satisfaction or impact from a list of items such as exit factors or healthcare benefits. Data collected is displayed in the matrix question widget and does not impact favorability scores. This question type should not be used to collect your main feedback.

Dropdown

Participants choose one answer from a dropdown menu. This question type is intended for collecting categorical data such as a person’s status or demographics like work location or age. This can be helpful for collecting additional demographic information that may not be included in your HRIS. Responses can be found in the dropdown area of reporting and are not included in the percent favorable scores. If linked to a demographic, data is displayed in your demographic reporting and available for filtering.
