Build Your Engagement Surveys

The following recommendations are a compiled list from our People Element experts of overall best practices when designing your engagement survey.

Read this article for standard tips we recommend for all surveys.

Length

An engagement survey should be 40-50 questions. Asking too many questions can lead to survey fatigue, but not asking enough can lead to unclear feedback. On average, taking a survey with 50 questions takes 8-10 minutes.

Survey Design

Select the ready-to-go engagement survey template.

Engagement calculations and reporting widgets will only populate for surveys with all 6 engagement index questions included and are created using the engagement template. Learn more about engagement here.

Strategically add open-ended questions where you want more detailed feedback.

Settings

Set up

Point in time - you will select a start and end date for your survey. Engagement surveys are usually open for 2 to 3 weeks. This timeframe can be adjusted depending on your population size and communication strategy.

Assign Participants

Manually assign participants - You will have to assign participants to your survey in the Manage Participants table of the PEOPLE tab. Review this article for more details on assigning your survey to participants.

Email/Text/Kiosk

Email & SMS - With point in time surveys you wants to use "option for custom date" to send your survey invitations via email or SMS. This allows the notifications to automatically send on the selected days to assigned participants that have not yet completed the survey.

We recommend sending reminder notifications for engagement surveys twice a week while the survey is open. Don't forget to set an email/SMS date for the day the survey opens.

Kiosk - We recommend using kiosk mode to reach out to audiences who might not have access to email or SMS. Provide a kiosk weblink to your participants via flyers, posters, screensavers, etc. You could also create a QR code for participants to use to easily access their survey via a mobile device.

Phone Collection

Effectively capture feedback from your hard-to-reach population or provide your survey participants more opportunities to debrief their experiences and feel heard. Reach out to your People Element contact about incorporating phone interviews into your data collection methodology.
